Elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration improves water use efficiency and growth of a widespread Cerrado tree species even under soil water deficit Acta Botanica
Souza,João Paulo; Melo,Nayara Magry Jesus; Halfeld,Alessandro Dias; Vieira,Kamilla I. C.; Rosa,Bruno Luan.
ABSTRACT Changes in atmospheric CO2 levels are accompanied by ecological interactions involving other environmental factors, such as drought, which can severely alter the water balance of plants, thereby influencing sap flow, gas exchange, and plant growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the water use economy, leaf gas exchange, and growth of young plants of the species Lafoensia pacari subjected to high concentrations of atmospheric CO2 ([CO2]) and soil water deficit. Increased vapor pressure deficit was observed from 1200 to 1800 hours. Plants under elevated [CO2] exhibited increased leaf photosynthesis, resulting in improved growth. Specific leaf area was lower in plants under high [CO2], mainly after soil water deficit treatment. Daily...

Genotypic variation in morphology and freezing resistance of Eucalyptus globulus seedlings subjected to drought hardening in nursery Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Coopman,Rafael E; Jara,Jorge C; Escobar,Rene; Corcuera,Luis J; Bravo,Leon A.
Eucalyptus globulus Labill is one of the most planted species in Chile, because of its fast growth and superior pulp qualities. Nevertheless, the incidence of drought and frost damage immediately after planting is frequent. The purpose of this work was to study the effect of drought hardening on frost resistance and on variations in morphological traits that may increase drought resistance at nursery phase in four genotypes of E. globulus Labill. Drought hardening treatments consisted in induced water stress by watering restriction, until pre-dawn stem xylem water potentials (Ψpd) reached -0.2, -1.8 and -2.6 MPa. Two water stress-rewatering cycles were applied during 54 days of hardening. Plant and root biomasses were affected by the interaction...

Growth and photosynthetic capacity in two woody species of cerrado vegetation under different radiation availability BABT
Ronquim,Carlos Cesar; Prado,Carlos Henrique B. de A.; Paula,Nádia Figueiredo de.
Seedlings of two woody species of cerrado vegetation, Copaifera langsdorffii and Eriotheca gracilipes, were studied under three different radiation availability (100, 80 and 30% transmittance). Full solar radiation brought about more biomass, higher total leaf area, higher maximal photosynthesis per crown on area or on mass bases and higher photosynthetic capacity on area bases. Only the photosynthetic capacity values on leaf mass bases were higher in both species under low radiation availability (80 and 30% transmittance). The differences of accumulated biomass appeared more clearly after 4 months of sowing but the root/shoot dry biomass ratio and height were maintained constant for both species independently of the available radiation. Cultivated under...

Growth evaluation and water relations of Erythrina velutina seedlings in response to drought stress Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Silva,Elizamar Ciríaco da; Silva,Marcos F. A.; Nogueira,Rejane J. M. C.; Albuquerque,Manoel B..
Erythrina velutina Willd. (common name: mulungu) is a deciduous, heliophyte found in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. To evaluate the growth and water relations of mulungu seedlings in soils with different degrees of moisture content, an experiment was carried out under greenhouse conditions using four water treatments (100%, 75%, 50% and 25% of the field capacity- FC). Predawn (Ψpdw) and midday leaf water potential (Ψmdw), relative water content (RWC), plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter, leaf area (LA), specific leaf area (SLA), leaf area ratio (LAR), dry matter in different organs, biomass partitioning and root:shoot ratio were evaluated. No differences were detected between treatments for Ψpdw after 30 days; however, at midday,...

Growth of provenances of Cryptocarya alba during water stress and after re–watering in the nursery Scientia Agricola
Meza,Sergio Enrique Espinoza; Arce,Marco Aliro Yáñez; Díaz,Carlos Renato Magni; Herrera,Eduardo Enrique Martínez; Ortega,Juan Francisco Ovalle; Miranda,Suraj Antonio Vaswani.
ABSTRACT: Intensification of drought in Mediterranean–type climates has limited seedling establishment. The knowledge of the ecology of selected species and its intraspecific variation to water stress at the seedling stage should be considered in order to overcome limitations. We investigated variations in growth, survival, and leaf–level physiology in four provenances of the endemic Cryptocarya alba (Mol.) during water stress and after re–watering. Seedlings were cultured in the nursery during 23 months and then subjected to two watering treatments based on soil water content (well–watered and water restriction, 0.38 and 0.17 cm3 cm−3, respectively) for 45 days. At the end of the watering treatments, seedling growth, above– and belowground biomass,...

Growth of Vernonia ferruginea Seedlings Submitted to Thermal Stress Planta Daninha
AMARAL,C.L.; SANTOS,J.I.; PORTUGAL,C.R.S.; BRAGA,A.F.; ALVES,P.L.C.A..
ABSTRACT: Stress caused by extreme temperatures is one of the main elements that limit the geographical distribution and the seasonal growth of several plants, causing a severe delay in their development, reducing the photosynthetic rate and signaling the synthesis of defense compounds. Considering the current environmental changes and the damages that these changes can cause in plant physiology and growth, the objective of this work was to understand the interactions between temperature, physiology and growth, and to characterize the impact of temperature changes on the initial development of Vernonia ferruginea Less. Seedlings of this species were conditioned in germination chambers at previously adjusted constant temperatures (10, 20, 25, 30, and 35 oC)...

Improvement in light utilization and shoot growth in Hymenaea stigonocarpa under high CO 2 concentration attenuates simulated leaf herbivory effects Acta Botanica
Maia,Renata A.; Fernandes,Geraldo W.; Silva,Advanio I. S.; Souza,João Paulo.
ABSTRACT This study evaluated the photochemical responses of photosystem II and growth of Hymenaea stigonocarpa under CO2-enriched conditions with exposure to simulated herbivory events. After herbivory simulation in two distinct parts of the stem of plants (apex and base), chlorophyll a fluorescence, chlorophyll index, growth, extrafloral nectary density, leaf mineral nutrition, and biomass production were evaluated. Plants of H. stigonocarpa grown under high [CO2] after simulated herbivory in the apical part of the stem had higher electron transport rate, effective quantum yield of photosystem II, and chlorophyll contents. However, simulated herbivory in the basal portion of plants grown under high [CO2] increased plant height, branch and root length,...

Management Of Commelina benghalensis with Saflufenacil in Shaded Environments Planta Daninha
SANTOS JUNIOR,A.; FREITAS,F.C.L.; SANTOS,I.T.; SILVA,D.C.; PAIXÃO,G.P.; SEDIYAMA,C.S..
ABSTRACT: The repetitive use of glyphosate in the control of weeds in eucalyptus plantations has selected tolerant species such as Commelina benghalensis. Therefore, the use of herbicides of other mechanisms of action, such as saflufenacil, in rotation or combination with glyphosate, is necessary to reduce damages caused by C. benghalensis, whose sensitivity to herbicides can be influenced by the shading caused by the eucalyptus crop. This study aimed to assess the efficiency of saflufenacil in the management of C. benghalensis at different shading levels. Three experiments were carried out regarding a certain shading level (cultivation environment with 0, 40, and 55% shade). The experimental design was a randomized block design with five herbicide doses...

Nutrient use efficiency in interspecific hybrids of eucalypt Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Rosim,Camila Capodifoglio; Hsing,Tseng Yao; Paula,Rinaldo Cesar de.
ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to evaluate nutrient use efficiency in interspecific hybrids of eucalypt, as an aid in the development of forest breeding programs for areas with limited nutrients. To do this, five clones were evaluated at 2.25 years of age from hybrids resulting from crosses of Eucalyptus grandis x E. urophylla (C1, C2, C3, C4 and C5). The experimental design was of randomised blocks, with single-tree plots and 35 replications. For the study, four trees of average performance were cut down (replications) from each treatment (clone); the biomass, and content and efficiency of use of N, P, K, Ca and Mg were determined in the wood, bark, leaves and branches. The data were submitted to analysis of variance and the F-test, and the means...

Physiological and biochemical responses to drought stress in Barbados cherry Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Medeiros,David Barbosa; Silva,Elizamar Ciriaco da; Santos,Hugo Rafael Bentzen; Pacheco,Cinthya Mirella; Musser,Rosimar dos Santos; Nogueira,Rejane Jurema Mansur Custódio.
To evaluate physiological genotypic differences between two Barbados cherry genotypes (13- and 14-CPA) under water deficit, initial growth, water relations, and organic solute accumulation were evaluated in an experiment performed using four-month-old seedlings, which were subjected to four water treatments (100, 75, 50, and 25% of field capacity), with five replications. Severe water deficit (25% of field capacity) negatively affected plant height, stem diameter, leaf area, dry matter of the leaves and stem to both genotypes, and root dry matter to genotype 13-CPA. Predawn (Ywpd) and midday leaf water potentials (Ywmd) were reduced in plants grown under 25% of field capacity, only in the genotype 14-CPA. There was not a change in relative water content,...

Relationships between crown architecture and available irradiance in two cerrado species with different leaf phenologies Rev. Bras. Bot.
Santos,Karine M.; Consolaro,Hélder N.; Moreno,Maria Inês C.; Prado,Carlos Henrique B.A.; Souza,João Paulo.
Structural differences between cerrado species with different leaf phenologies are linked to crown architecture, leaf production, and biomass allocation to shoots and leaves. The present study characterized crown structures and the patterns of biomass allocation to leaves and shoots in two woody cerrado species with contrasting leaf phenologies and quantified the irradiance reaching their leaves to determine the best period during the day for photosynthetic activity. The shoots and leaves of five individuals of both Annona coriacea (deciduous) and Hymenaea stigonocarpa (evergreen) were collected along a 50 m transect in a cerrado fragment within the urban perimeter of Catalão - GO, to determine their patterns of biomass allocation in their crowns. The...

Responses of six Brachiaria spp. accessions to root zone flooding R. Bras. Zootec.
Caetano,Luana Pabla de Souza; Dias-Filho,Moacyr Bernardino.
Some morphophysiological responses of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu, cv. Piatã, cv. Arapoty, B163, B166 and B. ruziziensis R124 were compared in plants grown in pots, under flooded and well-drained conditions. Flooding reduced leaf elongation rate in all accessions. Leaf dry mass production was lower under flooding than in the control plants in all the studied accessions, except in cv. Piatã. Root dry mass production was reduced by flooding in cv. Marandu and in R124, while the proportion of biomass allocated to roots was reduced by flooding only in R124. It was not possible to detect significant differences between water regimes in the percentage of biomass allocated to culms and leaves for all accessions. Flooding decreased the number of tillers in...

Root and Shoot Contribution to Carbon and Nitrogen Inputs in the Topsoil Layer in No-Tillage Crop Systems under Subtropical Conditions Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Redin,Marciel; Recous,Sylvie; Aita,Celso; Chaves,Bruno; Pfeifer,Ismael Cristiano; Bastos,Leonardo Mendes; Pilecco,Getúlio Elias; Giacomini,Sandro José.
ABSTRACT Recycling of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) from plants into soils is decisive for maintaining soil organic matter and soil fertility. Therefore, we quantified plant biomass and C and N in the shoots and roots from the topsoil layer for a wide range of annual crops grown under subtropical conditions. We grew 26 species, 13 main crops, and 13 cover crops, in the field in standard sowing arrangements. Root biomass was recovered from the 0.00-0.20 m soil layer at flowering, and shoot biomass was measured at flowering for all crops and at maturity only for the main crops. Root dry matter (DM) exhibited an average of 14.9 ± 5.7 % of the total shoot biomass at flowering, and the mean shoot DM to root DM ratio was 6.9 (2.8-15.0) for the 26 crops considered....

Shoot-foliage relationships in deciduous, semideciduous, and evergreen cerrado tree species Braz. J. Plant Physiol.
Souza,João Paulo; Prado,Carlos Henrique B. A.; Albino,Ana Lúcia S.; Damascos,Maria A..
The morphology and the biomass allocation in shoots and leaves were investigated in 15 cerrado tree species with distinct leaf phenology growing under natural conditions. Higher values of leaf/shoot ratio on mass base, individual leaf area, leaf area per shoot, leaf display index, and leaf number per shoot length were found in deciduous than in evergreen species. The differences about shoot-foliage relationship across leaf phenological groups could be explained by plagiotropic shoots on deciduous and by erect shoots in semideciduous and evergreen species. Plagiotropic shoots allow similar irradiance along shoots and high biomass allocation in favor of leaves without foliage self-shading in deciduous tree species. The structural differentiation between...

Temporal variations in the primary productivity of Eleocharis acutangula (Cyperaceae) in a tropical wetland environment Rev. Bras. Bot.
Chagas,Gustavo Gomes; Freesz,Giselli Martins de Almeida; Suzuk,Marina Satika.
Wetland vegetation typically includes aquatic macrophytes with high primary production capacities. The present study investigated how hydrological variations affect biomass allocation and primary productivity in the emergent macrophyte Eleocharis acutangula (Roxb.) Schult. Eleocharis acutangula ramets were collected from the Campelo Lagoon flood plain (21°39'S, 41°12'W and 21°37S, 41°11'W) between March/2005 and February/2006. This region experienced an unusually short rainy period between November/2005 and February/2006 that generated atypically high primary production levels (128gDWm-2month-1) and total biomass gains (447gDWm-2) in May and June/2005 respectively. Our data indicated that primary production and biomass allocation were strongly influenced...
